DELSU VC's Historic Thanksgiving: DTSG Promises Partnership towards the fulfilment of Institution's Vision DELSU's Seventh VC, Professor Andy Ogochuchu Egwunyenga, Family, Students, Staff, Stakeholders, and others Celebrates in Grandstyle.

ABRAKA- The New and Seventh Vice  Chancellor, Delta State University,  Abraka, a World  renowned Professor of Zoology (Parasitology), and Public Health Consulant, Professor  Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga  was recently Celebrated by Students, Stakeholders as the VC of   DELSU as the Institution of Higher Learning, the school Premises, atmosphere, Environment, Community,  Auditorium was filled to the brim- mamoth  crowd  besieged St' Paul's Catholic Chapel, Abraka Campuses- Sites 1 and 2, the thanksgiving Venue and reception ground Professor Egwunyenga and Family  marked great thanksgiving service with Stakeholders on 23rd February, 2020 to glorify the Almighty God as the new DELSU VC in Grandstyle.

This  auspicious event took place at the  University Campuses- Site 1, 2 and 3 in Abraka during the thanksgiving Service, where the  Mass took place at Site 2 while the reception took place at the convocation arena in Site 3 which attested the fact that the rate of your gratitude determines the heights of your altitude. Professor and Professor (Mrs) Andy Egwunyenga  had shown the attributes of the Biblical David.

King David, the Psalmist at a moment in Biblical history stated: " I will give thanks continuously unto the most high God for in him comes my help". This is a typical example of the  exhibition of  life of thanksgiving  showing times of God's greater mercy, either in breakthroughs or otherwise.

The University town of Abraka in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State,  Sunday, 23rd February, 2020, was agog as Professor Andy Egwunyenga, thanked God on his successfull emergence as the Vice Chancellor of Delta State University, Abraka, as the State Governor, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa graced the event.

The Erstwhile Rector, Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku (DSPG), Professor Egwunyenga took over as the 7th Vice Chancellor of the institution from Professor Victor Peretomode on the 1st of December, 2019. It was a carnival-like event as  mammoth crowd thronged St. Paul’s Catholic Church in Site II, the venue for the occasion and thereafter the Convocation Arena in Site III of the campus for the reception.

The thanksgiving Ceremony of Delsu VC was graced by the executive Governor of Delta State,  his Excellency, Sen Dr. Arthur ifeanyi Okowa, some  Political Stakeholders, top Government functionaries which included amongst others: The  Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly (DTHA), hon Sherrif Of,  Chief Whip, DTHA, Hon. Mrs Pat Ajudua, the  Chairman, Governing Council, DELSU, Abraka, Prof Sam Oyavbaire,  Delta State Hon. Commissioner for Finance, Chief Fidelis Tilije, Delta State Hon. Commissioner For Higher Education,  Prof. Patrick Muoboghare, Delta State Hon. Commissioner for Urban renewal,  Olorogun Arthur Akpowowo, Delta State Hon.  Commissioner For Basic Education,  Mr. Patrick Ukah, Commissioner for Basic Education, a Political Ieader in Ndokwa Nation,
Dr. (Mrs.) Esther Uduehi, and other top PDP Party Chieftains in Ethiope East and  Delta State which included: O.C. Majoroh and Chief Benard Edewor.

  Most importantly, the occasion was also highly attended by a great number of Traditional Rulers  across the 25 LGAs, ethnic devides, Anioma Nation, Urhobos, Itsekiri, Ijaw, and Isoko Nation of Delta State, who came  alongside with the Chairman of the Council in Delta State,  HRM Dr. Emmanuel Efeizomor II JP OON, Obi of Owa, others to mention but a few HRM Akpomeyoma Majoroh Ojeta II, Ovie of Oruarivie Abraka Kingdom, Orodje of Okpe, Orue I, represented by Prof. (Chief) Emmanuel Oyibo, HRM Ambassador Donald Ejechi Ekeruche, the Ebu of Umuebu Kingdom, Obi Prof. L.C. Nwoboshi, Obuzor of Igbuzor, Obi Chukwumalieze, Obi of Onicha-Ugbo, Obi Kikachukwu, Obi of Ubulu-nor and HRM Paul Ifeneziuche, the Igwete of Amai Kingdom.

The recent address by the VC during his February 23rd, 2020 thanksgiving Service in Delsu,  Abraka as reported by Journalists that  Professor Egwunyenga, stated  that he was overwhelmed with joy, seeing the large turnout of persons that came out to join him in appreciating God over the smooth takeoff of his administration.
He added: “Seeing all past Vice Chancellors here and the crowd from the university environment attests to the fact that I will enjoy the support of stakeholders in DELSU.

That the DELSU VC vowed not to  disappoint all those that have high hopes in his capacity to deliver, then promised to promote peace in the university, Egwunyenga assured the staff and students of the university that he will be guided by the laws of DELSU and vowed to embrace best practices that will move the tertiary institution forward.

His Excellency, Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, charged the VC to look into ways of considering paying attention to courses that are focused on Information Technology.

Furthermore, he assured the new management of the state government’s willingness to partner with the new administration to help actualize his dreams for the university.

No doubt, both Educational and other critical stakeholders in the state believed  that the crowd that came to grace the occasion was a clear indication that Prof. Andy Egwunyenga is a unifying factor and one that can take DELSU to the next level of greatness.

DELSU Vice-chancellor, Professor Andy . O.  Egwuyenga who was visibly elated had this to say at the thanksgiving: “ I bear no grudge against anyone and I ask that we forgive one another and unite as a community of scholars and administrators to collectively lift up Delta State University", he once stated.

Delsu VC, Professor Egwunyenga is fully Committed to the Vision of the University's Founding fathers, this fact is clearly shown in a recent reports on the responses of the Institution's Stakeholders as recently reported by a Public Affairs Analyst, Anthony Arugba in a Vanguard  Vanguard News of January 10th, 2020.

The VC was quoted to have admonished the Students of the great Institution, where he Stated:  “ Let us live up to the inspiring words of our anthem and create a citadel of learning that “thrives in hard work for self-reliance, great in knowledge, character and service.”

“ I solemnly pledge to lead, inspire and advance the repositioning of Delta State University as the best state university in Nigeria".

“ To realize this vision, we must provide the highest quality of teaching and learning to our dear students; focus on improving the welfare of staff to ensure effective and motivated workforce; pay proportionate attention to the development of the three campuses of the university; improve university’s relationship with host communities and genuine cases of injustice shall be addressed.”

Stakeholders in the state, staff and students, who spoke in separate interviews in a recent survey carried out as reported in Vanguard News Online of 10th December,  2019 by a Public Affairs Analyst, who said in that reports  that Stakeholders in Education sector, precisely DELSU expressed confidence in the ability of Egwunyenga to transform the university and urged him to be fair, firm and just to all.

The leader of Urhobo students in the university, Comrade Efe Kelvin, said: “ DELSU students have been waiting in anticipation for the new VC to commence duties. Students unionism has collapsed and we believe that with Prof Egwunyenga on the saddle, who is a comrade-professor, that students unionism will be re-awaken.

“ We the students of DELSU are hopeful that Prof. Egwunyenga will breath fresh air to students unionism.”

The Secretary of National Association of Academic Technologists, Delta State University chapter, Comrade Kweke Godfrey, said:  “ We expect him to unify the entire staff. Before he came on board, there was dissension among staff and we hope that he will establish peace in the institution once more.”

In the same vein, a library scientist, Dr. Ogochukwu Emiri, also advised the new vice-chancellor to unite all staff of DELSU to enhance productivity.

“ Also, let him focus on improving the ICT centre in the Library because the world today is now 100 per cent ICT, especially in the western axis.”

Also speaking, a stakeholder in Delta State, Mr. Ike Gerard, described the new vice-chancellor as a friend to the people. He said: “ Prof Egwunyenga is a friend to the people that is why the whole Church is full to capacity.

“ Never a time in the 27 years history of DELSU that people came out in this large number to celebrate the ascension of a new VC. We are elated and we know that his coming will bring more development to DELSU because he understands the people and has their interest at heart.

“ He is a man of service and he is going to reconcile the entire staff, students and university community and together we shall grow to greater heights for the next five years .”

Prof Temi Akporunor, said: “ Prof. Egwunyenga is coming at a time some believe there is a downward slope in the area of staff welfare. He has an enormous task to perform in all areas. But I think his first line of action is to address the issue of unity. So many persons are aggrieved.

“ Also, he has to urgently address the issue of students welfare because we are here for the students; their welfare should be the top priority of the new vice-chancellor. Without students, this will not be a university.

He added: “ As you can see, everybody is jubilating that Andy has come on board and that tells a lot. I cannot be jubilating that a person who has done well to the satisfaction of all just left office; we should be feeling sad that the person is leaving but the reverse is the case  here.”

“It’s a daunting challenge, but I am sure that you will do well as VC,” Okowa Stated

In another development, DELSU  Governing Council Chairman, Professor Sam Oyovbaire said that he has witnessed similar occasions before but that today’s occasion was unique in every way.

The erudite and World Distinguished Professor added  that the screening process that produced Egwunyenga as VC was not marred by controversies, unlike previous ones.

He then passed a vote of confidence on Professor Egwunyenga said that the  new VC will do the university proud, saying that during the screening process Egwunyenga’s vision for the university made him excel.

Reporters from “Shocknaija News Online” had it that the entire auditorium for where the prayers were offered by the priests and the reception area where the  guests that graced the occasion at both Campuses 1 and 2 in Abraka Who were sumptuously fed and graciously attended to by the Egwunyenga and family, DELSU Management were filled to the brim, a Mammoth crown with signs of acceptance, greater celebration and arrival of an Illustrious son of Delta State.

The media reported that the atmosphere in that occasion raises the hope of stakeholders in the positive direction that some goodies has arrived Delta State University, Abraka.

In a recent survey carried out by one of the popular online News, Publishers of: “” News Online,  on March 5th,  2020  stated that Stakeholders, Youth Leaders in different  ethnic  Nationalities of Delta State on their perception on Professor Egwunyenga's Emergence as DELSU VC, Some of the Delta Youth groups Presidents, Youth Leaders, Civil Society Leaders,  Cultural Organizations and the School's Cultural troops that were interviewed by the Media  stated that the World Distinguished Professor of Parasitology will excel because he merited the office, then Commended Governor Ifeanyi Okowa for bringing in Professor Andy Egwunyenga as DELSU VC, while stating that his developmental strides in Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku is still historic and  unforgettable.

First, the Chairman, National Youth Council of Nigeria, Delta State Chapter, Comrade Kenneth Okorie in an interview with our reporter prayed the Lord to give Professor Egwunyenga the wisdom to Manage DELSU in favour of Delta Youths towards Sustainable Development of the State.

When our reporters put up a call to the VC of Crown University International Chartered Inc. VC (Americas, Ghana and other Partner Campuses Worldwide), Who also the World Grand President, International Chartered World Learned Society (ICWLS),  World Distinguished Professor of Information Communication and Technology (ICT), Professor Emeritus On Merit, Professor Bashiru Aremu reacted by thanking God for his Mercy on the life of Professor Egwunyenga.

According to the Manager, Organization For the Advancement of Anioma Culture (OFAAC), Prince Andrew Obi who spoke to our reporter on the emergence of Professor Egwunyenga described him as of the  Anioma's finest green academia and researcher  with global recognition in the field of both Medical and Biological sciences.

The Spokesperson of Delta Cultural Initiative (DCI) Worldwide, whose Organization is the Founder of Delta State Network of CSOs, NGOs, CBOs, and FBOs, Comrade Mercy Okonkwo who spoke on behalf of Civil Society groups in Delta State thanked the Lord on his emergence, therefore enjoined the VC to promote the institution to enviable heights in terms of global best practices on quality Higher Education.

The President, Voice of Burutu People- a popular Socio-cultural and political Pressure group in Ijaw Nation, Comrade Felix Okpe stated that is a right step in the right direction, that Delta State needs ethnic balancing for the citizens to embrace peace, he added that Egwunyenga's profile  Speaks Volume.

One of the female   Youth Leader from Urhobo Nation, Ese Iroro tasked the VC on the need to nuture and  utilize the available talents, According to her that this idea should be sorted  especially amongst the youths. Also that the VC should put more efforts in promoting research in the Institution.

A Youth Leader from Itsekiri  Nation and one of the  top Executives of Delta State Council, Comrade Landlord Ejiro described Professor Egwunyenga as a youth friendly VC, while citing his exploits in DSPG.

Also some Youth Leaders, media Practitioners from Isoko, Anioma Nation, and Niger- Delta Region; Mamuzo, Victor Obi, Ben Obi and others Commended the gesture on the VC's Successful thanksgiving service on his emergence.

A Reporter from OFAAC-Anioma Essence Magazine, Publishers of  a foremost  global Cultural Magazine who recently interviewed the Wife of the VC attested to the fact that the erudite Professor has done great in terms of Community services as part of his contributions to humanity, also gave kudos to his life of generosity, and humanitarian dispositions.

Prof. Egwunyenga has contributed immensely in the growth and development of Research locally and Internationally in the field of Medicines and Biological Sciences as World renowned researcher.

Prof Egwunyenga's  interest in Parasitology and Entomology issues was kindled during his National Youths Service (NYSC). His enthusiasm in this field of endeavor  propelled him into research in toxicity of Capsicum spp and Aframemum melagueta bioremediation, Distribution of Cicadulina, Epidemiology aspects of onchocerciasis, Malaria infection of the cord birth weights in Nigerians and others, where he published extensively.

 It is worthy of note that we mention at this juncture that  what brought this erudite scientist/researcher to be acclaimed internationally are his several Contributions to the growth of education has no boundaries as his works speaks volume, not only in Nigeria but in the global context.

 The Acclaimed,  World Distinguished  Professor of Parasitology and a Public Health Consultant currently the Vice-Chancellor of Delta University, Abraka, Professor Andy Egwunyenga on  1st December, 2019 took over the mantle of Leadership of the great institution from his Predecessor, Professor Victor .F. Peretomode.

Drawing from the recent documentation of the new DELSU VC’s Profile by the ICT Department of Delta State University, Abraka, who is also the  erstwhile Rector of the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, Delta State, Nigeria was born on the 4th of April, 1960 in Issele- Uku, Delta State, Nigeria to the family of Mr and Mrs Godwin Egwunyenga of Ogbe-Ute Quarters Atuma- Iga, Oshimili North Local Government Area of Delta, Nigeria.

The man we are Celebrating today,  the 7th DELSU VC started his  educational career with Local Authority Primary School, Onicha Olona (1965–1967) and St. Monica Primary School, Illah (1967–1969) all in Delta State, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate in 1969. He thereafter had his secondary education in St. Paul Grammar School, Ebu, Delta State (1971–1973), Rimi College, Kaduna (1974-1977) and finished up at Federal Government College, Kaduna, Kaduna State (1977–1979)where he obtained his West African Secondary School Certificate in 1979 in flying colours. He immediately, got admitted into the University of Lagos where he obtained his B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Zoology with 2nd Class Upper Division in 1982.

The World Distinguished Professor, Prof. Andy Ogochukwu Egwunyenga started his teaching career immediately after his National Youth Service Programme under the employment of the Federal Polytechnic, Bauchi in 1983 as Lecturer III.

He steadily grew without losing any promotion to become a Senior Lecturer at the Polytechnic in 1992. During this period, he furthered his studies at the University of Jos and obtained a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Zoology with specialization in Applied Entomology and Parasitology in 1990.

The Star, World Acclaimed Professor graduated with a Distinction on an enviable average score 74.5%.As a Scholar who desired to contribute hugely to mankind, he  immediately  registered  for  a  Ph.D.  programme  at  the  same  University  of  Jos  in 1991.However, shortly after the creation of Delta State and the Delta State University, Abraka he got appointed into the University’s Department of Zoology and thereafter bagged the Doctorate in 1997 in Parasitology and Entomology.

He  became a Professor of Zoology at the Delta State University in 2005 at a young age and has been serving as external examiner and assessor to many Nigerian Universities for the examination of Ph.D. and MSc Theses and assessment of Senior Academic Staff to Professorial Cadre. Prof.

 Egwunyenga to this day  is one of the highly celebrated past Chairmen of ASUU at the Delta State University Abraka as under his leadership, the University Staff became the highest paid University employees in Nigeria with 70% of Basic Salary as Housing Allowance and 44% Excess Work Load. Professor Egwunyenga has devoted much his time to the service of God and humanity as a devout Catholic.

 He is a husband of one wife, Prof. Mrs. Ebele Egwuyenga of the Department of Educational Administration, Delta State University, Abraka. They are blessed with a daughter, Abigail Ogechukwu Egwunyenga

In May 2014, Prof. Egwunyenga delivered the ever green 35th in the Series of Inaugural Lectures of the Delta State University, Abraka titled “Monsters inside Us: Killing and Eating us Alive. It was a well- attended and highly commended inaugural lecture. Prof.

 Egwunyenga has over thirty-seven (37) years of teaching (Polytechnic and University) and Administrative experience in Nigeria. Furthermore, he was part of the pioneer team that fostered academic excellence at the Department of Zoology, Delta State University, Abraka and nurtured to fruition four Postgraduate programmes in the Department namely; Hydrobiology and Fisheries, Applied Entomology, Parasitology, Pests and Disease Management from where over 500 Scientists from within and outside Nigeria has been produced.

Prof. Egwunyenga is a member of several professional bodies, associations: Fellow, Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, London; Member, Nigeria Society for Parasitology; Member, Entomological Society of Nigeria; Member, Science Association of Nigeria and Member, Nigeria Institute of Management (NIM).

Before his elevation as a Rector, While functioning as the  Rector/Chief Executive Officer, Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku (2007 – 2011), and after his tenure he has performed greater responsibilities that attested to his capabity as VC.

He was  one time Chairman,  Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Delta State University, Abraka (2001 – 2005), Acting Director, Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (ISLT), Delta State University, Abraka (2004), Director, Institute of Science Laboratory Technology (ISLT), Delta State University, Abraka (2005 –2007),

The erudite Professor was also the Coordinator, Postgraduate Program, Department of Animal and Environmental Biology, Delta State University, Abraka (2012–2016).

The World Distinguished Professor of Zoology (Parasitology), Prof. Egwunyenga also served as member: representing Faculty of Sciences in the Senate of the Delta State University, Abraka (1996–1999);Delta State University Abraka, Senior Staff Club Management Committee (1995–1996); Delta State University Abraka, Admissions Board (1997–2001); Delta State University Abraka, Research and Publications Committee etc.

 Basically, between 1998  and 2011, he was  the Business Editor and Member, Editorial Board of the Journal of Science and Environment, Delta State University, Abraka and the Financial Secretary and Member of Council, Nigeria Society for Parasitology.

The erudite Scholar and World Distinguished Professor of Parasitology had done numerous Community Services to his Special Recognitions to promote societal development in Nigeria and globally. Some of his exploits are Stated this.

 Delta State University Vice- Chancellor, Professor Andy  Egwunyenga has the unique experience of combining academics and administration with trade unionism and distinguished services to government and community.  He has served Delta State Government in various capacities. These include: Member, Delta State Vision 20:2020

He has also held various positions as member, Technical Committee, 2009-2010; Member,   Transition Committee, 2015;   Secretary,   Human Development Committee, Transition Committee, 2015; Member,  Delta State Advisory and Peace Building Council, 2015-2019. He is also an active member of Amnesty International and Chairman, Research and Publications Committee of Forum of Delta State Intellectuals for Good Governance (FIDAGG).

Professor Egwunyenga has won numerous meritorious awards, among which are; Award of Excellence for Administration by the Students Union Government, Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi– Uku (2007/2008), Golden Award for Excellence for Hardwork, Transparency and Accountability, and Contribution to Development to Education in Nigeria by Nigerian Print Journalism Development Organization (2010), NAPS Platinum Service Award by National Association of Polytechnic Students (NAPS) [2010], Nigeria Library Association, [NLA] Award of Excellence as The Most Outstanding Library Development Administrator (2010), Honorary Fellowship Award by Nigeria Institute of Landscape  Horticulturists  For  Great  Contribution  to  Landscape  Development,  Award  by  National Association of Science Technology Student (NASTES), Nigerian Institute of Science Laboratory Technology, Delta State University, Abraka, for Immense Contribution Towards Advancement of Science and Technology Globally (2010), Excellence Award Certificate, as Anioma Professor of the Year, 2015 by Anioma Media Network, March (2016).

 The new DELSU VC, Professor Andy Ogochukwu  Egwunyenga had written over hundreds  of Books in the field of Medicines, Biological Sciences, and co- authored numerous ones - Text Books for undergraduates, Graduates, Post-Graduates and others for students of different levels of education globally. The World Distinguished Professor had  some  Selected Articles and  Publications in both Local and International Journals of over forty-nine (49) in number as documented by DELSU University Authority, precisely the ICT Department as World Class  green Researcher.

Additionally, some other of  the exploits of the new DELSU VC,  Professor  Egwunyenga, World renowned Professor of Zoology (Parasitology) and Public Health Consultants are numerous as he has attended over  thirty-nine (39) Conferences Locally and Internationally with exceptional   papers  read and exceptional public lectures  presented towards the achievements of the 17 United Nations global Sustainable Development Goals as a Distinguished Professor of repute in the field of Medicine and Biological Sciences.
