Covid-19 Lockdown: North Central NYCN, Group Chargers North Central Governors On Palliatives

By Victor Bieni

The North Central
National Youth Council of Nigeria Vice President, Comrade Felix Onuh alongside Comrade Jacob Ochulayi
Convener, Middle Belt Sociopolitical Youth Think Tank and Comrade Richard Haruna Yakubu
Co-Convener has charged Nigerian Government, Governors in the North Central Zone to zip up towards providing proative measures in the ongoing lockdown sit at home order that thev world is witnessing, a global emergency health crisis that is ravaging the world, compelling people to stay at home in lockdown, affecting more than half of the world’s physical and commercial activities, closing churches and mosque from congregating.

The group disclosed this to the media in a press statement stated that the Coronavirus pandemic also called COVID -19 has been on a killing spread across the world, from far away Wuhan China through Asia, Europe, America, Africa and nowhere in our country Nigeria with about 323 confirmed cases, 85 recovered cases and 10 deaths, according to current NCDC Figures, and for our reminder, there are no vaccines yet.

In their words: "It is no longer doubt or a hoax neither is it a tale of disbelieving that COVID -19 pandemic is real and infecting people in real-time, as drastic as it came, it equally requires drastic and proactive measures to address it in the place of leadership, leadership at all levels, and in this situation the role of world leaders, political leaders, religious, business and community leaders and all well-meaning lovers of good in our society cannot be overemphasized and are highly needed now than ever before".

"COVID -19 as a global pandemic may have taken our government by surprise due to its fast ravaging nature, but also it has exposed a lot of deficiencies and decay in our health system and failures in our governance and leadership quest as a nation, this is a public health crisis that has affected the economic lives and social wellbeing of Nigerians as well as people of other countries of the world, most especially the youths whose entire economic life and earnings dependant largely on daily work to make ends meet, it is therefore worthy of note that about 70 percent of this youths are unemployed and in every 10 Nigerian students, six are on self-sponsorship".

"These have even been made more difficult due to the impact of the stay at home and lock down been enforced by the government as containment measures, of which no meaningful social welfare palliatives have been put in place by the government of the day, both at the federal, states or local government level, the risk of keeping this vulnerable youth demography that depends largely on a day to day activities for survival on lockdown for two weeks or more, without any direct palliatives to support their livelihood is a serious compromise of national stability.

"The Nigerian constitution chapter II section 14 Subsections (2b) stated clearly the primary and most paramount obligations of the government, which is to protect lives and properties as well as to ensure the welfare and wellbeing of its people".

"The National Youth Council of Nigeria, NYCN North Central zone, the apex youth body in the zone and the Middle Belt sociopolitical Youth Think Tank, a reenergized Middle belt youth group hereby strongly note with great concerns the following:
That COVID-19 is a global pandemic and a public health emergency crisis and should be treated as such"

"That all Governors of the North Central states should raise up to the emergency task of containing and preventing the spread of COVID-19 by setting up world-class isolation and treatment centers with ventilators as well as make arrangements for testing kits and other medical infrastructure needs"

"Invest a robust amount of resources on stimulus welfare palliatives for the indigenes of their respective states by providing food items, household grocery items, and conditional cash transfer to youths and women and other social welfare needs of the people".

"That all North Central State Governors include the leadership of the National Youth Council Nigeria North Central zone and Middle Belt Sociopolitical Youth Think Tank in the various COVID – 19 relief committees at their respective states to give room for youth inclusiveness and transparency".

"That COVID – 19 relief efforts and donation be devoid of politics or mismanagement and looting of such funds".

"By this press conference, we the above organization and a coalition of other youths oriented civil society organizations and groups, are hereby calling on all the Governors of Northcentral states (Benue state, Plateau State, Nasarawa State, Kogi State, Niger state Kwara state, FCT) to take rapid action and exercise pragmatic and visionary leadership towards addressing the above-stated concerns and demands to forestall further restiveness on the parts of our dear youths, anything short of that is a total breach of the social contract that binds the Government and the people together".

"This monster called COVID – 19 will surely be conquered and we will win, God Bless Nigeria, God bless the North Central".
