By Victor Bieni, Asaba

The Senior Special Assistant to Governor Ifeanyi Okowa On Orientation and Communication, Prince Obaro Unuafe has said that there are sunny side on the recent temporary minimum wage suspension for some categories of workers, that is, Civil servants in Delta State.

Prince Obaro Unuafe made this disclosure in an exclusive interview with our reporter today in his office at Asaba, Delta State capital when asked by Newsmen to react to the new development which bothers on the cuts of some Civil servants in the state.

Governor Okowa's Aide stated that he is not surprised to see detractors and mischief makers criticise every action of Government, also that it is necessary to properly situate Delta State government' temporary suspension of minimum wage for civil servants on grade levels 7-17.

The Communication expert noted that Deltans could recall that the State was among the few states that first implemented the minimum wage in Nigeria even though its workforce is one of the highest in the Federation.

According to him the dwindling remittances from the Federation account and reduced 1GR occasioned by the COVID-19 Pandemic currently seen in every states, including the Federal Government has led to spending adjustment in line with the economic realities.

The Delta State Government was forced to take the painful step of temporarily suspending minimum wage amidst other options like retrenchment of staff and withholding remittances of Cooperative Societies and other deductions.

In his words: "In all these we must note that Dr Okowa's commitment to the welfare of the civil work force remains sancrosant".

"In October the State Secretariat complex will be ready for use just as Dr Okowa continues to maintain the entrepreneurship programmes of YAGEP and STEP even in the face of the ravaging pandemic.

"The toll of the Corona virus is high on Delta State especially due to the ever rising cases of people testing positive as well as the huge resources expended on maintaining victims in isolation centres all over the state. The Delta State resources are not inelastic and this is the time to show understanding with the Delta State Government".

"Elected and appointed persons have already accepted to forefeit part of their basic salaries as their contribution to the containment of the Corona virus regime".

"The Delta State Government has shown magnanimity by paying the salaries of civil servants and teachers even at home. They must also show understanding by making this temporary sacrifice".

"I call on Deltans to support rather than condemn the Government for this painful but necessary step,if only to keep the state financially afloat".
