Two Female Medical Doctors Receive Prizes As Co-Winners Of The 2020 Medical Woman Of The Year Award.


Assoc. Prof. Uzoma Agwu from Ebonyi State and Dr. Ngozi Ali from Delta State who had contributed immensely to the growth of the Medical Women's Association of Nigeria (MWAN) within the past year received Prizes as Co-Winners of the 2020 Medical Woman of the Year Award, during the National Executive Council (NEC) Meeting of the association in Abuja.
The Medical Women's Association of Nigeria, MWAN held her NEC meeting at Jades Hotel Abuja on 14th and 15th September 2020. The theme of the meeting was *"Strengthening health systems through health data management and social mobilization for Health"
The meeting commenced with members of the association visiting the Wuse General Market where they sensitised the traders on importance of proper and constant use of facemasks to prevent spead of Covid-19. About five hundred fliers were distributed to traders. The National President, Dr. Minnie Oseji and the National Publicity Secretary, Dr. Vivian Omo-Aghoja paid a courtesy call on the Acting Honourable Secretary for Health, FCT Dr. Mohammed Kawu and intimated him of the activities the association since inauguration of this current executives, the NEC meeting and the upcoming congress of the Medical Women's International Association, Near East and African Region in March 2021.

In her presentation on Advocacy and Lobbying for Health during the NEC Continuous Medical Education (CME) Programme on Social Mobilisation for Health, Dr. Oseji emphasized the need for Doctors and Health Workers to always explore all avenues for dialogue, and discouraged strike actions as a way of resolving conflicts with employers. Other eminent speakers gave presentations at the CME programme. Another CME programme on Health Data Management featured presentations on the Community Audit of Maternal and Neonatal Deaths and Operating a Cancer Registry. 

The NEC meeting was held both physically and virtually to enable more members participate while keeping to COVID-19 prevention protocols on gatherings.
Another highlight of the NEC meeting was the presentation of MWAN Champion sashes to Governor Udom Emmanuel of Akwa Ibom State for signing the Violence Against Persons Prohibition Law, Dr. Peteru Innuduh, Medical Director of Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi for his financial and moral support to MWAN Benue State Branch and her members, as well as Dr.
Kabiru Musa Shinkafi, the Immediate Past Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association of Zamfara State Branch for his financial support of MWAN Zamfara State Branch.

Some recommendations reached at the end of the NEC meeting
were that MWAN National Secretariat and State Branches should embark on programmes to cater for their Senior MWAN members and Senior Citizens in their communities, conduct cervical screening for 6,000 women in the next one year, as well as build capacity of MWAN members on Palliative Care for Cancer Patients. Members were urged to target Traditional rulers for selection as MWAN male Champions.
